Each community has its own times. Most boats call at several communities on one run, so a boat back to Bay Shore leaves each community at a different time.

Storms, ice and tides can disrupt Fire Island Ferries service. Fire Island Ferries posts service changes on its website and sends them to its mailing list.

Bay Shore ferry terminal parking and directions

Fire Island Ferries' Main Terminal (Bay Shore ferry terminal) is at 99 Maple Avenue, Bay Shore, NY 11706. For part of the year Fire Island Ferries splits its Bay Shore departures among docks on Maple Avenue, and its schedule names the terminal for each community.

The Bay Shore LIRR station is about a mile north of the Main Terminal. David Bros. taxis meet every arriving train, and walkers follow Fourth Avenue south, which becomes Maple Avenue. Uber and Lyft also serve the terminals, and the Uber app sells ferry tickets.

The terminal lots charge by the calendar day and fill on summer weekends and holidays. The Town of Islip and private owners run the other lots nearby, and most town lots charge by the hour.

Fire Island communities on the Bay Shore ferry

The Bay Shore–Fire Island ferry lands at a dock in each of its eight communities. Fire Island Ferries runs fewer boats to Atlantique and Seaview than to Ocean Beach, and some days none.

The Burma Road runs along the middle of Fire Island and connects every community, so riders can walk between them on it or along the ocean beach. Fire Island Water Taxi, a separate company, runs boats between the communities along the island.

When the Bay Shore–Fire Island ferry is busiest

Fire Island Ferries enforces its freight limits most strictly on Sunday morning boats from Ocean Beach and on midday trips. Oversized wagons, coolers and packing totes can be refused, so riders send bulk items back on the Saturday freight boat and collect them at the Bay Shore freight house on Sunday.

Terminal parking fills on summer weekends and holidays, so drivers leave time to find another lot. The freight boat leaves from the end of Maple Avenue, Monday through Saturday.
