The MV Mary Ellen is a auto and passenger ferry<\/a> vessel owned and operated by Cross Sound Ferry Services, Inc. and serving the Cross Sound Ferry<\/a>, a ferry route connecting New London, Connecticut and Orient Point in Long Island, New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MV Mary Ellen has capacity for 85 vehicles and 675 passengers in total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is powered by Caterpillar EPA Tier 2 diesel engines and can reach a service speed of 15 knots making it one of the fastest vessels in the Cross Sound Ferry fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vessel, originally named Grand Republic, was built for the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry<\/a> in 1983 by Offshore Shipbuilding, a now defunct ship building company in Palatka, Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cross Sound Ferry Services, Inc. acquired the boat in March 2003 and renamed it to Mary Ellen. It began service in June 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
