Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry schedule and guide
Washington State Ferries (WSF) runs the Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry, a car and passenger ferry across Admiralty Inlet between Port Townsend and Coupeville on Whidbey Island. WSF recommends a reservation for every vehicle on the Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry.
Ana/SJs & PT/Coup - SR 536 Bridge Closure in Mount Vernon Begins Nov. 1
Beginning Sunday, Nov. 1, the SR 536 Skagit River/Division Street Bridge in Mount Vernon will close in both directions to vehicles for at least two weeks for painting and preservation work. Weather could extend the closure.
Travelers using SR 536 to go to and from the Anacortes or Coupeville ferry terminals must follow the signed detour via I-5 and SR 20. Please allow extra travel time, especially if you have a vehicle reservation. For more information, visit the WSDOT project page.
Update - Winter vehicle reservations release postponed two weeks to Nov. 10
We’re postponing the two-month vehicle reservations release for our winter sailing season (Dec. 27 through March 20, 2027). The delay is needed while we work to adjust reservation availability around upcoming terminal construction.
The new reservations release date is Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. To ensure a smooth and fair experience during this high-demand period, we will continue using a virtual waiting room during the reservations release.
Anacortes/San Juan Islands route:
Some days in February and March 2027 will not be available to book reservations for Orcas and Lopez due to construction on the vehicle transfer span at several terminals.
The two-week and two-day reservation releases will remain at 7 a.m.
Reservations are currently open for booking through December 26, 2026.

Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry vehicle reservations
WSF takes vehicle reservations on the Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry through its Save A Spot program, online or by phone at 888-808-7977. Reservations are one way, so drivers book the trip out and the trip back. A reservation costs nothing, but WSF charges a no-show fee when a reserved vehicle does not travel.
WSF releases 80% of Port Townsend–Coupeville vehicle space 2 months before each schedule season starts. The other 20% stays open for stand-by and emergency vehicles. Stand-by space grows when reserved drivers cancel or do not show.
WSF charges the no-show fee for a reservation canceled after its cutoff on the day before travel. WSF allows no changes in the last 2 hours before a reserved sailing. Drivers can switch to stand-by on an earlier or later sailing the same day by telling the ticket seller, which avoids the fee.
Drivers with a reservation arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the sailing and bring the barcode or number from their confirmation email. Reserved vehicles wait in the same tollbooth line, then go to the reservation holding lanes. Drivers without a reservation wait for stand-by space and sometimes miss the sailing they wanted.
Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry tidal cancellations
WSF cancels some Port Townsend–Coupeville sailings, or moves their times, because of tidal currents. WSF plans these tidal cancellations ahead and lists the canceled and added sailings by date for each schedule season.

Port Townsend ferry terminal parking and directions
The Port Townsend ferry terminal sits at 1301 Water Street, Port Townsend, WA 98368. From the Edmonds–Kingston ferry or Poulsbo, drivers cross the Hood Canal Bridge on Highway 104, take the Port Ludlow/Chimacum/Highway 19 exit and follow Highway 19 to the Port Townsend ferry dock.
From the Olympic Peninsula, drivers take Highway 101 east, then State Route 20 east into Port Townsend. State Route 20 becomes Sims Way, then Water Street, and leads to the Port Townsend ferry dock.
Downtown Port Townsend has very little parking, and street parking has a 2-hour limit. WSF advises riders to park in the Haines Place Park-N-Ride lot. Jefferson Transit buses serve the Port Townsend ferry terminal.

Coupeville ferry terminal parking and directions
The Coupeville ferry terminal, which WSF schedules also call Keystone, sits at 1400 South State Route 20, Coupeville, WA 98239. From the Clinton ferry terminal, drivers follow Highway 525 north, turn left onto Highway 20 and follow the signs to the Coupeville ferry terminal.
From Oak Harbor, drivers follow Highway 20 south past the town of Coupeville, then follow the signs on Highway 20 to the Coupeville ferry terminal. At the terminal, drivers use the vehicle turnaround to face south before the tollbooth.
Riders park along the road near the Coupeville ferry terminal or at the state park. WSF notes that no secured parking is available. Island Transit buses serve the Coupeville ferry terminal.
The Coupeville ferry terminal has one bike rack for 6 bikes. Cyclists pay at the tollbooth window on the side away from vehicles.
When the Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry is busiest
WSF's best times to travel guide marks most midday Port Townsend–Coupeville sailings in both directions as often full. Some Friday and Saturday sailings from Coupeville and Sunday afternoon sailings from Port Townsend are likely full. Most late evening sailings are unlikely to fill.
